G5 opportunities
BYU is likely the best G5 commodity to land a P5 deal, but there is always talk about UConn and the Service Academies. Then there are the outliers like Houston, Cincinnati and Boise State. So it got me to thinking about SDSU.
The city of San Diego just lost their NFL team and SDSU is now the only game in town. The problem is that San Diego County is the only place in California that cares about SDSU. With a population of a little more than 3 million over a land area close to the size of Connectcut, it arguably puts SDSU on par with UConn. Going by the debatable Facebook College football fandom map, SDSU may have as big of a following as UC Berkeley, Stanford and UCLA, if you can believe that (and I'm not sure I do). San Diego has the 28th largest TV market.
But... SDSU currently draws less than 40,000 fans on average, which sadly is the best in the MWC. And Californians don't seem to be as passionate about college football as other states.
So SDSU would be a long shot. But if the SEC, B1G and maybe even the ACC swallow up the Big XII before the PAC does, their expansion options would be limited. If SDSU could somehow field a consistent top 25 football between next year and 2016 and play their cards right, they could be of interest to the PAC
